It's a clever, practical design feature that has been carried over from the original Savage Mako. The rear cockpit, for example, is bigger, more spacious than you might expect from this size of boat due to the use of a shortened transom and half-sized outboard well. That said, the boat is roomy inside with ample seating, storage and move-about space. I suspect if you can get your antenna clear of obstructions or perhaps try a design with a good balance between high- and low-angle performance you'll get the best results.
An amplifier will amplify both the signal and the received noise, so its use in improving the signal to noise ratio is limited (though there are specific cases where it can help, like putting one at the antenna-end of a long cable run to compensate for cable losses).
